Subproject 6: Characterization of the low-temperature kinetics of large hydrocarbons for the development of engine control models
In the first project period, the combustion process was controlled by means of controlled multiple injection in order to set an optimum cylinder pressure curve. This work has given rise to kinetic questions concerning the reaction processes of partially combusted mixtures with additional fuel, with regard to the reaction processes during ignition and the formation of pollutants, in particular unburnt hydrocarbons (UHC), polycyclic hydrocarbons (PAH) and soot. Basic kinetic investigations on these issues were already carried out in the first project period in subprojekt 5 (Teilprojekt 3) by the working group of Prof. Dr. Katharina Kohse Höinghaus. Due to her retirement, Prof. Dr. Tina Kasper is a competent partner for the reaction chemistry for the second project period. With many years of experience in reaction kinetics and mass spectrometry, she represents an excellent subproject leader for the investigation of combustion chemistry in the engine.
In the second project period, the studies of the former subproject 5 (Teilprojekt 5) are to be continued and the investigated parameter range is to be extended, in particular towards higher pressures and shorter reaction times. Furthermore, larger hydrocarbons will be included in the studies as fuels. The work in TP 6 will also investigate the relationship between the ions naturally generated in a combustion process and the thermodynamic state of the fuel gas mixture in order to determine whether the ion current signal, which is comparatively easy to measure in the engine, can be used as a control parameter in combination with the cylinder pressure.
